Titans must improve QB containment

The Titans didn’t feel like they did a good enough job containing Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson in last Sunday’s loss.

They hope they’ve learned some lessons as they prepare for another player in the same mold — San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick — this Sunday.

Kaepernick has carried 31 times for 172 yards this season, and his 5.6-yard average per carry is just a bit behind Wilson’s 5.9-yard average, which is tops among all quarterbacks.

“It’s a new week and a new opponent,” Titans cornerback Jason McCourty said, “but (the Seattle game) gave us a chance to see a running quarterback, which I guess can help, especially for defensive linemen and getting rush patterns.”

Wilson finished with 10 carries for 61 yards and twice converted third-down attempts by scrambling. He also eluded the rush on a handful of occasions and completed passes, like the time he threw back across the field to running back Marshawn Lynch for a 55-yard gain.

“You’ve got to be more disciplined,” Titans defensive end Derrick Morgan said. “You saw a couple of times where we got out of our rush lanes and lost contain. It all comes down to being disciplined, staying in your rush lanes and doing your job.”

Titans safety Bernard Pollard remembers Kaepernick all too well from last year’s Super Bowl, when Kaepernick ran seven times for 62 yards and one touchdown against Pollard’s former Baltimore team.

“The guy does a great job of extending plays, kind of like Russell did,” Pollard said, “and Russell got out on us a lot.”
